Egypt vows stronger energy, mining sectors to drive growth

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening its energy and mining sectors during a key meeting today with Prime Minister Dr. Moustafa Madbouly and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Karim Badawi.

According to Presidential spokesperson Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, the discussions highlighted the government’s current strategies for leveraging Egypt’s natural resources to drive economic growth and attract international investment. Minister Badawi presented an overview of ongoing operations, which include expanding oil and gas production, upgrading refineries and petrochemical facilities, revitalizing the mining sector, and encouraging regional collaboration to draw investment into Egypt’s energy industries—all while upholding international standards for safety and environmental sustainability.

The meeting also emphasized Egypt’s focus on guaranteeing reliable supplies of petroleum products to meet the country’s needs, especially in the electricity sector. Recent efforts have led to a notable increase in the nation’s oil and gas output, successfully counteracting natural declines in gas production. The expansion of exploration activities and the addition of new petroleum reserves were identified as key achievements from July 2024 to June 2025.

One major topic discussed was the steady reduction of outstanding payments to Egypt’s foreign energy partners, with the government accelerating payments and inviting partners to ramp up production and exploration efforts.

President El-Sisi and his ministers also reviewed progress in developing Egypt’s gas infrastructure. In particular, new floating regasification units have doubled the nation’s capacity, enhancing security and flexibility in gas supplies—a critical step to prevent disruptions across all sectors.

Moreover, international cooperation remains at the forefront of Egypt’s strategy, with current projects underway with Cyprus to diversify gas supplies and support Egypt’s ambition to become a regional gas trading hub.

In the mining sector, the President was briefed on ongoing reforms, including transforming the Mineral Resources Authority into an effective economic agency, securing fresh agreements for mineral exploitation with international companies, and encouraging both foreign and domestic investment to advance value-added mineral industries.

President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of fostering a welcoming environment not only for foreign investment but also for Egyptian businesses. He called for continued development of new discoveries, rapid integration of these resources into production, and the expansion of research and exploration to further strengthen Egypt's energy independence and insulation from global market fluctuations.

The meeting underscored Egypt’s ongoing commitment to sustainable economic development and its evolving role as a critical energy hub in the region.
