Egypt announces winners of underwater cultural heritage photography competition

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has unveiled the winners of its inaugural Underwater Cultural Heritage Amateur Photography Competition, drawing attention to the country’s remarkable, submerged historical treasures.

The announcement comes at the conclusion of a two-day event (August 20-21) dedicated to celebrating Egypt’s underwater cultural heritage. The competition, launched earlier this month, invited amateur photographers to capture the beauty and significance of artifacts recovered from the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, now displayed at the Greco-Roman Museum and the National Museum of Alexandria.

Dr. Ahmed Rahima, Assistant Minister for Human Resource Development and General Coordinator of the event, highlighted the international participation and enthusiasm the contest received. A total of 155 contestants from Egypt and six other countries—Kuwait, Sudan, Algeria, Belarus, Spain, and South Africa—submitted more than 750 photographs.

A distinguished panel of professors from the Faculty of Fine Arts and archaeologists from the Supreme Council of Antiquities carefully evaluated the entries, eventually selecting the top ten standout images.

To nurture ongoing interest in underwater cultural heritage, the Ministry has designed attractive prizes for the winners, including complimentary trips to archaeological sites and museums, provided by the Egyptian Tourism Promotion Authority, as well as free admission passes to museums and archaeological sites.

Dr. Rahima emphasized that this initiative illustrates the Ministry’s dedication to using visual arts to promote Egypt’s unique underwater heritage, while supporting young talent and raising awareness about the value of submerged history both locally and internationally.

The Ministry expressed its heartfelt congratulations to all participants, and extended a warm invitation for the world to explore Egypt’s rich and fascinating underwater heritage.
