Egypt, Iran hail US-Iran war‑ending deal in phone call

Egypt’s foreign minister received a phone call on Monday from his Iranian counterpart, with both sides welcoming a new agreement aimed at ending the war between the United States and Iran, Egypt’s foreign ministry said.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi voiced “appreciation for Egypt and its leadership” for months of high-level efforts to bridge gaps in the negotiations, overcome challenges and encourage both parties to reach a deal ending the state of war, the ministry said in a statement.

Araghchi said Tehran was counting on Egypt to continue playing a “constructive role” in supporting the agreement, ensuring its sustainability and helping implement it as a step toward a final deal between the two countries.

The call also reviewed elements of the accord that ended hostilities between Washington and Tehran, as well as the cessation of fighting on all fronts, including in Lebanon, in a manner that preserves Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty welcomed the agreement, expressing hope it would mark “a real shift” toward restoring regional security and stability. He said Cairo would continue its diplomatic efforts to promote de-escalation.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for Lebanon, stressing the need for an Israeli withdrawal from all Lebanese territory, strengthening state institutions, and ensuring that weapons are held exclusively by the Lebanese state.
