Egyptian Foreign Minister meets Ugandan counterpart to strengthen bilateral ties

Kampala – Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, met with Uganda’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Henry Oryem Okello, in Kampala on Monday.

The meeting, attended by Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Hani Sweilam, focused on enhancing Egyptian-Ugandan relations and deepening coordination on shared regional and international issues.

Dr. Abdelatty emphasized the deep historical and fraternal ties between Egypt and Uganda, highlighting Egypt’s commitment to advancing political and economic relations.

He expressed Egypt’s interest in supporting Uganda through a financing mechanism for development projects in the southern Nile Basin countries. As a gesture of goodwill, Abdelatty presented a grant of agricultural equipment and light transport vehicles to a Ugandan civil society organization, aimed at supporting youth and small-scale farmers.

The discussions underscored opportunities for technical cooperation in economic, investment, and developmental sectors, including infrastructure and energy. Abdelatty highlighted the readiness of Egyptian companies to contribute to Uganda’s modernization, particularly in infrastructure, energy, water, and pharmaceuticals, with plans to localize some industries in Uganda.

He also noted the participation of Ugandan professionals in training programs offered by the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development, a contribution appreciated by the Ugandan side.

Water security was a key topic, with Abdelatty stressing the importance of cooperation under international law to safeguard the interests of all Nile Basin countries. He firmly rejected unilateral actions in the eastern Nile Basin that violate international law, affirming Egypt’s commitment to protecting its water security through lawful measures. Minister Sweilam reviewed ongoing bilateral water resource projects, emphasizing that adherence to international law is the foundation for cooperative efforts to benefit all Nile Basin nations.

The meeting also addressed regional developments, including security and political issues in Somalia and Sudan. Both ministers discussed the deployment of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in which Egypt and Uganda participate. Abdelatty underscored the need to preserve Somalia and Sudan’s unity, stability, and national institutions while promoting peace, security, and development across the African continent.

The visit reflects Egypt’s ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with African nations, fostering mutual growth and stability in the region.
