Egypt supports recovered addicts with sports and skills programs
In a heartening initiative to support individuals recovering from substance addiction, Dr. Amr Osman, Director of Egypt’s Fund for Drug Control and Treatment of Addiction, attended the closing ceremony of a special sports league for those who have overcome addiction. The event, part of Egypt’s “You Are Stronger Than Drugs” campaign, brought together 75 recovered individuals for friendly competition and community reintegration through sports.*
The sports league is one of many activities offered as part of Egypt’s free aftercare services, aimed at reducing relapse rates and empowering recovered individuals to reclaim their roles in society. Dr. Osman emphasized the importance of destigmatizing addiction and ensuring ongoing support, reminding participants and their families that addiction is a treatable condition.
The final football match of the league concluded with cheers and celebration as the winning team received their championship trophy and medals. Dr. Osman also took the time to engage in open dialogue with the recovered individuals, encouraging them in their journey of recovery.
Beyond athletic events, the Fund for Drug Control and Treatment of Addiction continues to support recoverees through vocational training and small business loans in partnership with the National Bank of Nasser. These initiatives help recovered individuals acquire new skills, secure employment, and become self-sufficient, providing hope for a brighter and more stable future.
This holistic approach reflects Egypt’s growing commitment to social integration, rehabilitation, and the well-being of all its citizens.
