Egyptian man discovers he’s been legally declared dead – while alive
In a remarkable and unusual incident, Egypt’s Ministry of Interior has clarified the case of a man from Menoufia governorate, north of Cairo, who discovered that he had been officially declared dead, despite being very much alive.
The case came to light when the man, a resident of Shebin El-Kom in Menoufia, filed a complaint after realizing a death certificate was issued in his name. The Ministry explained, in a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), that the confusion stemmed from legal steps taken by the man’s own family.
According to the Ministry’s statement, the man’s family had filed a case with the family court back in 2019, requesting he be declared missing. They stated that he had travelled abroad in 1995 and had since lost all contact with them. Based on these circumstances, an appeals court in Shebin El-Kom issued a verdict in 2021 declaring the man deceased and ordering his death to be officially registered.
The Ministry added that the individual has since been contacted and informed of the necessary legal steps to overturn the court ruling and correct the official records.
The peculiar case has drawn attention online, highlighting the complexities that can arise when families lose contact with loved ones abroad, and how legal processes can sometimes clash with unexpected realities.
