Egypt advances local medical device manufacturing in partnership with GE HealthCare
Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, received Dr. Mohamed Haroun, General Manager of GE HealthCare for Africa, and his accompanying delegation on Thursday at the Ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.
The meeting focused on the latest developments in the localization of ultrasound device manufacturing in Egypt.
The discussions highlighted the completion of a new factory for ultrasound device production in 6th of October City.
This milestone marks a significant step towards localizing the manufacturing of medical devices in Egypt.
The meeting also addressed the specialized training programs currently being implemented to enhance the skills and efficiency of the local workforce.
Furthermore, the discussions included Egypt’s healthcare sector needs for MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machines.
Dr. Abdel Ghaffar announced that the production and assembly of Egypt’s first locally manufactured MRI device will commence in the near future. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to localize medical equipment manufacturing, meet domestic healthcare demands, and position Egypt as an exporter to other African countries in the future.
During the meeting, Minister Abdel Ghaffar emphasized Egypt’s ongoing expansion and development of major healthcare projects, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving the quality of medical services for its citizens. He stressed the importance of accelerating the localization process for ultrasound devices to support these efforts.
The parties also explored opportunities to expand the use of artificial intelligence in Egypt’s healthcare system, with the aim of enhancing medical performance, improving public health outcomes, and building human capacity through internationally accredited training programs. The meeting underscored the value of leveraging existing expertise in the field.
