Egypt celebrates renowned Sir Magdi Yacoub with a dedicated statue

In a heartfelt ceremony at the Cairo Opera House, Egypt’s Ministry of Culture announced a new project to honor Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, the world-famous Egyptian-British cardiac surgeon, with a statue that will recognize his life-long achievements in science and humanitarian service.

In his speech, Dr. Yacoub expressed profound gratitude for the recognition. “I love Egypt as much as I love my work. I also love art and culture. Medicine and culture together are what give life real meaning,” he said. Dr. Yacoub added that the tribute is not only a personal honor but an acknowledgment of the fundamental role of science and humanitarian service in society.

Minister of Culture Dr. Ahmed Fouad Hanno announced the launch of the statue, which will be crafted by renowned sculptor Dr. Issam Darwish and installed in the iconic Kit Kat Square near the National Heart Institute in Giza. The location is particularly meaningful, as it is a place where thousands of patients seek hope every day, much thanks to Dr. Yacoub’s pioneering work.

The statue will stand 6 meters tall atop an 8-meter base, embodying Dr. Yacoub’s compassionate spirit and his lasting influence on generations of young Egyptians. The project is expected to be completed within about eight months.

According to Dr. Hanno, “The youth need real role models to inspire them towards values that build nations—this is why we are keen to honor and immortalize such figures in our public spaces and cultural institutions.”

Minister of Health Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar remarked, “Dr. Magdi Yacoub is a global figure and a symbol of dedication. He puts enormous effort into supporting young doctors and leading humanitarian projects, especially in Upper Egypt. Honoring him in this way sends a powerful message of gratitude to coming generations.”

Giza Governor Adel El-Nagar emphasized that Kit Kat Square was chosen to highlight the close connection between the statue and the nearby Heart Institute. The governor also announced plans to upgrade the surrounding area, ensuring the statue becomes not only a visual but also a social and cultural landmark.
