Egypt’s agriculture minister promotes produce exports at Madrid trade fair
Egypt’s agriculture minister Alaa Farouk attended the opening of the Fruit Attraction international fruit and vegetable fair in Madrid on Tuesday, as Cairo seeks to expand agricultural exports and reach new markets.
Farouk toured the Egyptian pavilion, where about 90 Egyptian companies are exhibiting, and met Egyptian and foreign businesses and investors, Egypt’s agriculture ministry said in a statement. The fair runs from Oct 6 to 8.
The minister was accompanied by Spain’s agriculture, fisheries and food minister Luis Planas, Egypt’s supply and internal trade minister Sherif Farouk, and Egypt’s ambassador to Spain, Ehab Badawy.
Farouk said the event offered exporters an opportunity to meet buyers, negotiate contracts and prepare export programmes ahead of the new season. He also held meetings with officials to discuss agricultural cooperation, exchanges of expertise and ways to facilitate trade between Egypt and Spain, the statement said.
He said Egypt was working to support private-sector investment in areas including agro-processing, modern farming, packaging and land reclamation, while maintaining quality standards, shipment traceability and plant-quarantine controls to protect the reputation of Egyptian produce abroad.
The ministry said the fair’s previous edition drew more than 120,000 visitors from 145 countries and around 2,200 exhibitors from 59 countries.
