Egypt, Germany discuss enhanced cooperation on development, migration, and water security
Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, met with Germany’s Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Mrs. Reem Alabali-Radovan, in Cairo on Sunday.
Also present were Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, and Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Hani Sewilam.
During the meeting, Minister Abdelatty praised the strong and constructive partnership between Egypt and Germany, emphasizing Germany’s support for development projects in Egypt. He expressed eagerness to deepen cooperation in areas including energy, organized migration and labor mobility, water resource management, vocational training, and joint work in Africa. Abdelatty encouraged German companies to invest further in Egypt, highlighting recent economic reforms.
Minister Abdelatty also briefed his German counterpart on ongoing efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza, detailing Egypt’s close cooperation with Qatar and the United States, and underscoring the urgent need to ensure unimpeded access to humanitarian aid. He stressed the importance of advancing international recognition of the State of Palestine and outlined Egypt’s plans to host a conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza after a ceasefire is achieved.
Dr. Rania Al-Mashat presented Egypt’s economic and social development agenda, focusing on structural reforms and the shift toward export-oriented sectors. She highlighted successful projects under the Egypt-Germany debt swap program and called for innovative financing solutions and stronger South-South and trilateral cooperation, leveraging German-Egyptian partnerships.
Dr. Hani Sewilam addressed water security and recent developments concerning the Nile River. He highlighted the need for adherence to international law and cooperative management of shared water resources, while rejecting unilateral actions in the Eastern Nile region. Sewilam reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting development across Nile Basin countries, especially through new Egyptian initiatives to finance projects benefiting the region.
The talks reflected both nations’ shared desire to expand their cooperation to promote sustainable development and stability in Egypt, the Middle East, and beyond.
