Egypt achieves third place finish at African Youth Games

Egypt marked a new milestone in its sporting achievements by securing third place overall at the 2025 African Youth Games held in Angola, despite sending one of the smallest country delegations to the event.

The Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports announced the success, highlighting the impressive results of the young athletes. Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, praised the outstanding performance, stating, "Achieving third place with a symbolic delegation reflects the strength of our preparation and support systems, and showcases Egypt’s strategic commitment to building a new generation of champions."

Egypt’s delegation comprised only 86 athletes, a notably lower number compared to key competitors such as South Africa (108 athletes), Algeria (151), Tunisia (137), and hosts Angola (165). Nevertheless, the Egyptian team clinched a total of 76 medals: 33 gold, 23 silver, and 20 bronze, affirming the nation's strong presence among Africa’s sporting elite.

In the overall rankings, South Africa claimed first place, with Algeria taking second. Egypt’s third-place finish was especially significant as it placed ahead of major sports nations such as Tunisia (fourth), Nigeria (fifth), and host country Angola (sixth), all of which sent larger teams to the championship.

The Egyptian athletes competed across seven sports: fencing, athletics, badminton, taekwondo, judo, table tennis, and beach volleyball. The choice to focus on select disciplines was part of a broader strategy to develop and support the country’s talented youth, ensuring the cultivation of future champions capable of representing Egypt on the global stage.

The Ministry emphasized that Egypt's achievement reflects both the quality of its athletic training programs and the resilience and talent of its young athletes, underscoring the country’s growing prowess in continental sports.

This accomplishment stands as a testament to Egypt’s vision for youth development in sport, and to its athletes’ determination to shine, no matter the odds.
