Egypt suspends performances by Lebanese singer Ragheb Alama after controversial concert
The Egyptian Musicians Syndicate announced a decision on Monday to suspend Lebanese singer Ragheb Alama from performing in Egypt and summon him for questioning, following alleged breaches of social norms during his recent concert in the country.
Mustafa Kamel, head of the Musicians Syndicate, issued a statement saying that he had observed “unacceptable behavior that contradicts Egyptian traditions and societal values” during Alama’s show in the North Coast region.
Video clips circulating on social media from the concert showed moments of public displays of affection between the artist and attendees, including a fan kissing Alama on the mouth, which sparked widespread debate and criticism online.
Kamel emphasized Egypt’s rich musical legacy, referencing iconic figures such as Umm Kulthum and Abdel Halim Hafez, and asserted that Egyptian stages are meant to uphold “artistic greatness and moral values.” He stated, “Egypt’s concert halls are not places for unrestrained conduct, kissing, or suggestive acts that contradict our customs.”
While expressing respect for the Lebanese people and the Lebanese Musicians Syndicate, Kamel confirmed that Alama has been requested to appear at the Egyptian Musicians Syndicate headquarters to explain his actions. The artist’s work permit for Egypt has been suspended pending this investigation.
Additionally, the Syndicate stated that it would coordinate with the Chamber of Tourism Establishments to investigate the venue that hosted the concert, pointing to the venue’s responsibility in upholding public standards.
The controversy has sparked widespread conversation on social media, with many users criticizing both Alama and the fan involved. Some questioned how the incident might affect Alama’s family, while others debated the boundaries of artistic expression in Egypt.
