The Citadel Festival has solidified its place as a cornerstone of Egypt’s cultural landscape and a must-visit destination for music lovers worldwide. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the historic Citadel, the festival blends the timeless charm of traditional Arabic music with contemporary global sounds, creating an enchanting experience that resonates with audiences of all backgrounds.
This year’s edition features an eclectic lineup, from Egyptian folk and classical performances to international acts like Colombia’s Lazona Jiteira and Kazakhstan’s state ensemble. Highlights include performances by renowned artists such as Ehab Tawfik, Hisham Abbas, Medhat Saleh, and the innovative Cairo-based band Wust El-Balad, alongside spiritual Sufi performances by Sheikh Yassin El-Tohamy and Mahmoud El-Tohamy. The festival also showcases young talents and experimental fusions, ensuring a dynamic mix of heritage and modernity.
“This festival is a global meeting point for creativity,” said Dr. Ahmed Fouad Hanno, Egypt’s Minister of Culture. “It unites authentic Arab melodies with modern rhythms, spiritual chants with youthful innovation, creating a vibrant tapestry that celebrates Egypt’s musical legacy while embracing global influences. It’s a testament to Egypt’s role as a cultural pioneer, fostering dialogue through the universal language of music.”
The festival pays tribute to 12 influential figures who have shaped Egypt’s artistic scene, including legendary composer Hani Shenouda, oud virtuoso Hussein Saber, and percussionist Mohsen El-Sawaf. This recognition underscores the festival’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage while inspiring future generations of artists worldwide.
In a landmark announcement, Dr. Hanno declared September 15 as the annual “Egyptian Music Day,” honoring the legacy of Sayed Darwish, the legendary composer known as the “People’s Artist.” Darwish revolutionized Egyptian music by blending traditional melodies with the spirit of the nation, leaving an enduring impact on Arab and global music.
Starting in 2025, Egyptian Music Day will celebrate the country’s rich musical heritage through concerts, exhibitions, and tributes organized by the National Center for Theater, Music, and Folk Arts. This initiative aims to promote Egypt’s cultural identity and inspire global appreciation for its contributions to music, inviting international audiences to explore its vibrant traditions.
Dr. Alaa Abdel Salam, President of the Cairo Opera House, described the festival as “a journey of the soul, weaving together echoes of the past and the pulse of the present.” He emphasized its mission to promote serious art, elevate collective consciousness, and foster cultural justice, making it a beacon for global audiences seeking authentic and transformative experiences.
The festival’s opening night, directed by Mahdi El-Sayed, featured a dazzling display of light projections showcasing icons of Arab music, designed by engineer Abdel Moneim El-Masry, with sound effects by Wagdi El-Fouly. Performances by the Cairo Opera’s Arabic Music Ensemble, led by Maestro Ehab Abdel Hamid, and Wust El-Balad set the tone for a week of unforgettable artistic encounters.
Held at the open-air Mahky Theater within the Salah El-Din Citadel, the festival runs nightly at 8 PM, offering a welcoming space for international visitors, expatriates, and locals alike. From August 15 to 23, 2025, attendees can immerse themselves in performances ranging from symphonic orchestras to Palestinian folk ensembles, ensuring a rich and inclusive experience.
