Moroccan Embassy in Cairo celebrates 26th Throne Day

The Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Cairo hosted a joyful, dignified celebration on Wednesday evening to mark the 26th anniversary of Throne Day. The event brought together dignitaries including Egypt’s Minister of Culture, Dr. Ahmed Fouad Henno, along with officials, ambassadors, diplomats, and journalists from both countries and beyond.

In his welcoming address, Morocco’s Ambassador to Egypt, Mr. Mohamed Ait Ali, emphasized the profound national significance of Throne Day—a commemoration of the accession of King Mohammed VI to the throne on July 30, 1999. He highlighted how the King’s 26-year reign has ushered Morocco into a new era of comprehensive reform. “King Mohammed VI has led the country through transformative political, economic, social, and cultural changes,” Ambassador Ait Ali remarked, “launching a new age marked by openness, democracy, strong institutions, respect for rule of law, social justice, and active citizenship.”

The Ambassador underlined Morocco’s growing role as a key player on the regional and international stage. The nation has become a leader in sustainable development and comprehensive modernization, expanding its partnerships and influence globally.

Ambassador Ait Ali expressed his sincere wishes for the continued strength and vitality of the longstanding bonds between Morocco and Egypt. He described their relationship as a model of enduring friendship and genuine partnership, deeply rooted in shared history and mutual respect.

Highlighting Morocco’s commitment to Africa, the Ambassador pointed out that Africa has taken center stage in Morocco’s foreign policy. Reflecting this, the country renamed its foreign ministry the “Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates.”

Ambassador Ait Ali further noted that King Mohammed VI has undertaken dozens of official visits to nearly 30 African countries, signing approximately 1,000 agreements across vital sectors. He emphasized the King’s vision of a partnership-based—not exploitative—relationship with Africa, embodied in dynamic support for south-south cooperation and both economic and human development across the continent.

A shining example of this vision is the innovative "Atlantic Initiative" launched by Morocco in November 2023. This strategic project aims to break the isolation of landlocked Sahel countries by linking them to the Atlantic Ocean through the Dakhla Atlantic Port and new overland logistical corridors via Mauritania and Chad. The initiative is designed to help reintegrate these nations into global maritime trade, enhance economic and social development, and facilitate greater regional and international exchange.

The 26th Throne Day anniversary celebration in Cairo was a heartening reminder of Morocco’s commitment to reform, partnership, and a brighter, more inclusive future for the region and the African continent.
