Egypt launches first international festival of traditional desert sports, arts

Egypt’s cultural and sporting heritage took center stage as the country inaugurated the very first edition of the New Valley International Festival of Traditional and Desert Sports and Arts.

The event, officially opened by Minister of Youth and Sports Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, alongside presidential advisor General Khaled Foda, New Valley Governor Major General Dr. Mohamed El-Zamlout, and Sharqiya Governor Eng. Hazem El-Ashmouny, welcomed distinguished guests, parliament members, and participants from across the Arab world and beyond.

The vibrant festival was held at the Camel and Equestrian Club and the Heritage Village in the heart of Al-Kharga, New Valley, drawing a large turnout of international visitors and local spectators.

Dr. Sobhy highlighted the deep cultural significance of the event, stating, “This festival revives traditional sports that have been integral to Egypt for centuries and, for the first time, sees active participation of women in desert sports.” He noted that the rich program includes traditional handicrafts and is expected to provide a boost to local tourism and the economy.

Recognizing the importance of preserving Egypt’s intangible cultural heritage, the ministry recently launched a new federation dedicated to these traditional sports, aiming to keep alive the customs and traditions cherished by Egyptian tribes.

Governor El-Zamlout warmly invited all lovers of heritage to discover New Valley, underlining the governorate’s unique legacy and its pride in hosting this international event.

As a further incentive, Minister Sobhy announced cash prizes totaling 20,000 Egyptian pounds for winners in horse and camel competitions.

Running from last Thursday to December 14, the festival is part of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s national initiative to renew pride in Egyptian identity and cultural heritage. The event features a wide array of activities including international camel and horse races, a desert marathon, Bedouin arts performances, as well as impressive demonstrations involving hunting dogs and falcons.

Egypt’s New Valley International Festival promises to become a beacon of tradition, sportsmanship, and intercultural celebration for years to come.
