Egypt appoints new acting Secretary-General for Supreme Council of Antiquities

In a recent Cabinet decision, Egypt has appointed Dr. Hisham El-Leithy as Acting Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities for a six-month term.

This appointment was announced following a directive by Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and upon recommendation by the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities.

Dr. El-Leithy has served as Head of the Department for the Preservation and Registration of Antiquities at the Supreme Council since 2023, and has held several leadership positions over his distinguished career. His experience includes serving as Director-General of Scientific Publications, overseeing the Center for Egyptian Antiquities Registration, managing various archaeological storage facilities, and leading numerous archaeological missions across Upper Egypt.

He has also represented Egypt in numerous academic conferences both nationally and internationally, published around forty scholarly articles, and contributed to five scientific books. Remarkably, he is the first Egyptian archaeologist to be appointed Honorary Researcher at the University of Oxford’s Griffith Institute.

Dr. El-Leithy holds a Master’s degree in Egyptian Antiquities (2001) and a PhD (2012).

This appointment follows the tenure of Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, to whom Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Mr. Sherif Fathy, expressed heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for his outstanding efforts and leadership over the past period. The Minister extended his best wishes to Dr. Khaled for continued success in his future endeavors.

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities remains committed to preserving Egypt’s invaluable heritage and advancing archaeological research and exploration.
