Egypt offers free early cancer screenings to over 11 million people
Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population has announced that more than 11.1 million citizens have received free early cancer detection services since the launch of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s national cancer screening initiative in June 2023. The campaign, known as "100 Million Healthy Lives," aims to detect cancers of the lung, prostate, colon, and cervix in their earliest stages.
Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the Ministry, explained that the process begins with citizens aged 18 and older visiting their local health unit. They complete a specialized questionnaire designed to assess risk factors and symptoms of the covered cancers. Based on the results, individuals are referred for further advanced medical tests and, if needed, begin appropriate treatment.
The initiative is designed not only to reduce the mortality rate from cancer by catching cases early, but also to ease the financial burdens caused by late-stage diagnoses. In addition, participants are offered assistance to help them quit smoking, further supporting public health.
Dr. Abdel Ghaffar added that the entire process is coordinated through an electronic system that connects health units, medical convoys, and hospitals, making it easier for citizens to access these vital services.
The Ministry of Health and Population remains committed to providing information and answering questions related to public health initiatives.
