New Alamein leading the future of coastal tourism
In a big win for Egypt’s booming tourism industry, New Alamein has just been named the 2025 Capital of Arab Resorts by the Arab Tourism Organization (ATO). This honor puts Egypt’s fast-growing Mediterranean hotspot squarely in the international spotlight.
Winning this title wasn’t easy. New Alamein was picked after a tough selection process, with judges looking at things like city management, modern infrastructure, top-notch recreation, sustainability, public safety, and how well the city adapts to new tourism trends.
Located on Egypt’s northwestern Mediterranean coast, New Alamein is a next-generation city, officially opened by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in March 2018. Just 30 miles from El Alamein International Airport, it’s easy for both local and international travelers to get there—setting the stage for a one-of-a-kind vacation.
This high-tech coastal city covers over 50,000 acres along the Mediterranean, thoughtfully divided into areas for tourists and residents alike.
South of the Alexandria-Matruh International Road, there’s a special investment zone, while the city’s historic district is home to the famous World War II cemetery, which honors the pivotal 1942 battle that helped change the course of the war.
New Alamein’s recognition highlights both its transformation into a top tourism and resort destination, and Egypt’s forward-thinking approach to city and tourism development.
As Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy pointed out, New Alamein stands out for its sleek, modern architecture, its mix of culture and entertainment, and a packed calendar of events.
From glitzy summer festivals to major concert series, visitors can expect a wide range of experiences in the year ahead.
The minister also made it clear that New Alamein is committed to sustainable tourism, which means protecting the environment and ensuring a high quality of life for both locals and visitors.
The annual Capital of Arab Resorts award shines a light on cities that excel in beach tourism and hospitality, encouraging other destinations to adopt best practices and keep innovating.
Cities that have won in the past have seen real increases in tourist numbers, and tourism leaders are confident New Alamein will see the same kind of growth.
ATO President Bandar bin Fahd Al-Fehaid praised Egypt’s “remarkable tourism comeback,” giving credit to government support, strong infrastructure, and the country’s growing list of attractions that now compete with some of the world’s most popular travel spots.
He also praised Cairo’s rise as a shopping and entertainment hub for Arab families, thanks to affordable luxury and a growing lineup of modern amenities.
ATO Assistant Secretary-General Walid el-Hanawi called New Alamein a symbol of Arab tourism’s revival after tough times.
“Through strategic training, digital transformation, and a strong push to upgrade its tourism workforce, the city has redefined visitor experiences and set new standards for tourism in the region,” he said.
Industry insiders are taking note of the market’s response.
Tourism expert and Egyptian Federation of Tourist Chambers member Hossam Hazzah pointed to a spike in bookings and interest from Gulf states, especially after Egypt’s standout appearance at Dubai’s International Tourism Exhibition.
“Alamein has quickly become a top pick for Gulf families, thanks to its luxury hotels, family-friendly amenities, and cutting-edge ‘smart city’ tech,” he said on TV, noting the city’s use of artificial intelligence to enhance the guest experience.
With demand on the rise, stakeholders are setting ambitious goals for hotel development, aiming for 25,000 to 30,000 rooms that could welcome up to five million tourists, while also creating lots of new jobs for local communities.
Mohamed Farouk, chairman of the Electronic Tourism Section at the Egyptian Travel Agents Association, sees New Alamein’s recognition as a sign of strong Arab support and proof of the North Coast’s impressive rise—from stunning beaches and a cosmopolitan vibe to the arrival of world-famous hospitality brands.
While visitors rave about the city’s hospitality and coastal beauty, he says speeding up the expansion of Alamein Airport is key to future growth.
He pointed to a parallel investment boom in nearby Ras El-Hekma as proof of international confidence in Egypt’s North Coast comeback, where luxury, easy access, and a mild climate make for an unbeatable combination.
The Ras El-Hekma deal with the United Arab Emirates further boosts the region’s reputation as a prime spot for major investment, supporting Egypt’s vision of building world-class resorts to rival top destinations in the Arab world and Europe.
As New Alamein steps up as the 2025 Capital of Arab Resorts, it represents not just the dreams of one city, but the promise of an entire region.
With steady investment, strong government support, and a thriving tourism industry leading the way, New Alamein is ready to welcome the world—offering breathtaking beaches, luxury living, and the legendary warmth of Egyptian hospitality.
