Indonesia marks 80 years of independence, celebrates deepening ties with Egypt

The Indonesian Embassy in Cairo hosted a vibrant reception tonight commemorating the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day, drawing diplomats, dignitaries, and community members together in a celebration of enduring friendship and cooperation between Indonesia and Egypt.

In a heartfelt speech, Indonesia’s Ambassador to Egypt, Lutfi Rauf, warmly welcomed guests, including Egyptian Minister of Endowments Osama El Azhari.

He expressed deep appreciation for their presence. “It is an honor to stand before you tonight,” the Ambassador said. “Thank you for joining us as we celebrate Indonesia’s eight decades of independence and the strong bonds between our nations.”

Egypt’s unique historical connection to Indonesia was highlighted.

“Egypt was the first Arab country to recognize Indonesia in 1945,” the Ambassador recalled, emphasizing how this early recognition laid a foundation for a lasting partnership.

Over the years, both countries have strengthened their ties in numerous fields, even amid global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.

Reflecting on nearly five years of diplomatic service, the Ambassador praised Egypt’s recent progress under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s leadership.

“Egypt’s development has given us greater opportunities to deepen and broaden our bilateral cooperation,” he remarked, pointing to major advancements achieved together.

Key milestones were referenced, including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2023, providing new platforms for dialogue and economic collaboration. Both governments also renewed their pledge to create more business opportunities and foster closer relations.

“This strong commitment from our leaders enables us to bring our partnership to a higher level,” said Ambassador Rauf.

A notable highlight was the Strategic Partnership Declaration signed during Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s historic visit to Egypt in April, with follow-up action plans in investment, defense, and education expected to further boost bilateral cooperation soon.

Education remains a core pillar of the partnership, especially with Indonesia’s growing number of students at Egypt’s renowned Al-Azhar University, now nearing 20,000, he said.

The Ambassador expressed deep gratitude to the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar for his continued support, noting that a new educational MoU is in the final stages of signing.

In addition to cultural and educational exchanges, Indonesia has channeled humanitarian aid to Gaza through Egypt, delivering over 2,200 tons of goods and contributing upwards of $2.2 million to support relief efforts—an enduring testament to solidarity in times of need.

As his tenure comes to an end, the Ambassador extended appreciation for the close partnership that has flourished between Indonesia and Egypt. “I sincerely thank you all for your support. I hope our solidarity will continue to bring mutual success. Until we meet again—Insha Allah.”

The event featured a number of Indonesian cultural performances.
