Egypt bolsters gas infrastructure with new floating terminals, regional cooperation
Cairo, Egypt – In a significant move to strengthen its energy security, Egypt has announced a comprehensive new strategy to ensure reliable gas supplies across all sectors, with increased investment in advanced floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) and intensified cooperation with neighboring Jordan.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources revealed that four state-of-the-art FSRUs are being deployed to support Egypt’s national gas networkduring peak demand periods in 2025. These floating units, stationed at strategic ports including Ain Sokhna and Damietta, will enable Egypt to process up to 2.7 billion cubic feet of gas per day, ensuring stable supplies for electricity, industry, and other critical sectors.
“This proactive, multi-pronged approach allows us to diversify our energy sources and quickly respond to international and regional market changes,” said the Ministry in a statement. The strategy includes partnerships with leading global energy companies, infrastructure upgrades, and expanded import capacity—key steps to maintaining resilience amid global energy volatility.
To further enhance regional cooperation, Egypt is working closely with Jordan, bringing an additional FSRU to Aqaba port this summer. This move will benefit both nations by creating a new entry point for gas into their respective national networks and boosting their capability to handle any supply emergencies. With this additional capacity, Egypt and Jordan will be able to respond swiftly to seasonal fluctuations and unforeseen disruptions.
Underlying these advancements is a collaborative effort involving several ministries, local companies, and international partners—all teaming up to expand port facilities, lay new pipelines, and improve operational readiness. Emphasizing both flexibility and rapid response, Egypt’s approach is designed to protect energy security and meet the needs of its citizens and industries.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing modernization efforts in the gas sector, aiming to maximize domestic production while diversifying sources of imported natural gas. This ensures the stability of energy supplies across Egypt’s economy, supporting sustainable growth into the future.
