Egypt’s Ministry of Health signs agreement with Boehringer Ingelheim to enhance stroke care

Cairo, Egypt – In a significant step to improve stroke care and outcomes in Egypt, the Ministry of Health and Population has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Boehringer Ingelheim, a leading global pharmaceutical company. The agreement aims to advance stroke management, reduce mortality and disability rates, and bring Egypt’s healthcare standards closer to international best practices.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population and Deputy Prime Minister, and attended by senior health officials and representatives from Boehringer Ingelheim, including Dr. Mohamed Mohsen, the company’s Medical Director for North, East, and West Africa.

Dr. Abdel Ghaffar described the agreement as a pivotal moment in developing Egypt’s National Stroke Network. It will focus on upgrading infrastructure, training medical professionals, and establishing unified, globally recognized protocols for fast and effective stroke intervention.

As part of the agreement, Egypt will introduce the International "Angels" Initiative in 20 state hospitals during the first phase, equipping stroke units, training healthcare teams in collaboration with the Egyptian Health Council, and launching public campaigns to raise awareness of stroke symptoms and the importance of immediate action.

Importantly, the partnership includes the registration of stroke cases on the "resq.org" platform, enabling performance evaluation and continuous service improvement, with Boehringer Ingelheim providing technical support at no cost to the government.

Dr. Mohamed Mashref, Boehringer Ingelheim’s General Manager for North, East, and West Africa, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to enhancing healthcare in Egypt by sharing global expertise and providing extensive training and support.

The signing ceremony was also attended by Dr. Sherif Wadie, Advisor to the Minister on Emergencies, Dr. Hossam Salah, Dean of Kasr Al-Ainy Medical School, and company representatives, including Ms. Maryam Bishara, Communications Director, and Dr. Tarek Barakat, Government Relations Manager.

This collaboration reflects a shared dedication to improving Egypt’s healthcare landscape, offering hope and better outcomes for thousands of patients and their families affected by stroke each year.
