Egypt’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Abou El-Enein
Egypt: No true Mediterranean cooperation without peace, Palestinian state
Madrid, Spain – Egypt’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Abou El-Enein, has called for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, emphasizing that true cooperation in the region cannot be achieved without upholding the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Speaking at the 9th Summit of Presidents of Parliaments of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), Abou El-Enein expressed gratitude to the Spanish Parliament for its leadership and reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to solidarity and shared responsibility for the prosperity of Mediterranean peoples.
Amid ongoing conflict in Gaza, Abou El-Enein condemned Israeli actions he described as tantamount to genocide and stressed that Israeli policies continue to impede regional cooperation. He insisted that enduring peace must be based on international resolutions: a two-state solution with a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital.
Abou El-Enein also highlighted the role of Egyptian diplomacy in prioritizing dialogue and cooperation at both government and parliamentary levels, particularly as Egypt assumes the presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly during a time of considerable tension and challenges in the region.
At the conclusion of the summit, PA-UfM members strongly condemned widespread Israeli violations in Gaza, reiterated support for Egypt's positions on the Palestinian issue, and called for accountability at the international level, including potential legal action against Israeli officials. They also reaffirmed their support for the creation of a Palestinian state and rejected any displacement of Palestinians.
