Egyptian President highlights progress in homegrown manufacturing and technological development
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a meeting today with Major General Mokhtar Abdel Latif, Chairman of the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI), to review the latest advances in Egypt’s industrial and technological sectors, highlighting the country’s growing role as a regional manufacturing powerhouse.
During the meeting, President El-Sisi was briefed on the progress of major civil and defense projects undertaken by AOI’s factories and subsidiaries. The briefing underlined AOI’s commitment to boosting local manufacturing, localizing advanced technologies, and establishing robust partnerships with leading companies both within the region and globally. The strategy, as discussed, focuses on modernizing production lines in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, enhancing technical capabilities, and fostering human capital to meet rapidly evolving technological demands.
Chairman Abdel Latif outlined AOI’s multi-pronged approach. He explained that the organization is upgrading its production capacity by adopting state-of-the-art technologies. Efforts are also being made to train and qualify personnel so they can keep up with new innovations. In addition, AOI is supporting research and development through collaborations with academic and technical institutions. The organization is working to deepen local military production to meet the needs of the armed forces and increase exports. Finally, AOI is expanding into new industries to respond to both domestic and international market demands, which aligns with Egypt’s goal of achieving self-sufficiency and boosting exports.
The talks also highlighted AOI’s diversification into key civil sectors, including transportation, electronics, communication towers, water pumps and sanitation systems, renewable energy, and medical supplies. One notable achievement is AOI’s partnership with international automaker Stellantis to begin annual production of the Citroën C4X model in 2024, targeting 28,000 vehicles within four years. New production lines are also launching for the Jeep Cherokee and Toyota Fortuner vehicles.
In the field of electronics, AOI is expanding into manufacturing laptops, tablets, smartphones, smart electricity meters, and routers, fostering an ecosystem that supports Egypt’s digital transformation goals.
AOI’s leadership also showcased efforts in clean energy — particularly the production of advanced solar panels and the establishment of a solar power station in Uganda as part of Egypt’s Nile Basin Initiative. To bolster marketing and sales, AOI has adopted digital platforms and partnerships to promote their products locally and regionally.
Furthermore, AOI is investing heavily in education and vocational training, supporting knowledge transfer and the development of highly skilled professionals through collaborations with Arab and international institutes.
President El-Sisi praised AOI’s progress and achievements, stressing the importance of increasing local content, reducing prices, and achieving greater competitiveness. He emphasized the goal of substituting imports with high-quality, home-grown products, particularly in critical sectors, to lower the import bill, preserve foreign currency resources, and strengthen the national economy. The President also highlighted the need for ongoing cooperation between AOI, government ministries, and the private sector to achieve greater industrial integration and maximize Egypt’s manufacturing potential.
With these initiatives, Egypt reaffirms its commitment to becoming a leading hub for advanced industrialization, technological innovation, and sustainable economic growth in the region.
