Egypt marks first Ramadan night with Taraweeh at Al‑Hussein Mosque
Egypt’s Minister of Religious Endowments, Dr. Osama Al‑Azhari, led the first Taraweeh prayers of the holy month of Ramadan at the historic Al‑Hussein Mosque in Cairo, marking the beginning of Ramadan in an atmosphere filled with spirituality and solemnity. Large crowds of worshippers gathered to take part in the first night’s prayers.
As part of the ministry’s efforts to revive traditional Quranic recitation during Ramadan, renowned Egyptian reciters Ashraf Saif Saleh and Dr. Ahmed Nuaina — the Chief Reciter of Egypt — led the Taraweeh prayers. The Ministry emphasized that it will continue to feature leading reciters across major mosques throughout the month.
The evening began with Islamic chants performed by Sheikh Abdel Latif Al‑Azab Wahdan, followed by the call to prayer and the night prayer led by Dr. Nuaina. The scenes reflected the strong religious heritage and cultural significance of Al‑Hussein Mosque, one of Egypt’s most revered spiritual landmarks.
In remarks delivered during the event, Minister Al‑Azhari extended greetings to Muslims across the Arab and Islamic world and conveyed congratulations to the Egyptian leadership and people. He noted that the ministry aims to enrich the spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan by presenting prominent reciters and strengthening the values of faith associated with the month.
Dr. Osama Fakhri El‑Gendy, Head of the Central Administration for Mosques and Quran Affairs, delivered a brief spiritual reflection on the virtues of Ramadan, particularly the significance of its first night. He cited prophetic traditions emphasizing the spiritual rewards of Ramadan and encouraged worshippers to devote themselves to acts of worship and good deeds throughout the month.
The twenty units of Taraweeh concluded with Witr prayer and a heartfelt supplication led by reciter Ashraf Saif Saleh.
The state‑run Al‑Hayah TV network will broadcast the nightly Taraweeh prayers from Al‑Hussein Mosque throughout Ramadan.
