Cairo forum traces artifacts’ journey from dig to display

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo opened its doors to a new international forum on Sunday tracing the fascinating journey of ancient artifacts— from their discovery in the earth to their proud display for the public.

Titled “Journey of an Artifact from Discovery to Museum Display,” the forum is a landmark collaboration between the Egyptian Museum and the esteemed Italian Archaeological Centre (CAI-IIC), representing the Italian Cultural Institute.

With a shared vision to celebrate scientific research and modern museum practices, the forum welcomed attendees with heartfelt opening remarks, setting the stage for a day of insight and cross-cultural dialogue.

The program’s first speaker, Dr. Costanza Di Simone, Wadi Halfa Museum Project Coordinator, highlighted the importance of digital and photographic documentation for protecting and sharing lost heritage, focusing on the ancient sites of Nubia.

Following this, Ms. Amani El Naggar—Ceramics specialist and curator at the Egyptian Museum—shared her expertise on advanced methodologies for documenting archaeological pottery, offering audience members a glimpse into how museums interpret and present historical finds.

The spotlight then turned to Dr. Fatma Keshk, an Egyptologist and gender specialist from the American University in Cairo Press, who took participants beyond the museum’s walls to reflect on the life and legacy of artifacts in the broader world.

Mr. Mohamed A. Ibrahim, a dedicated conservator at the Museum, offered a moving account of the unseen but crucial role conservators play in safeguarding Egypt’s vibrant cultural heritage.

The day concluded with a lecture by Dr. Sherine Amin, Director of the Scientific Office, who illustrated how new excavation findings can reshape museum narratives and breathe new life into age-old stories.

The forum wrapped up with an open discussion, Q&A sessions, and a warm invitation for attendees to share their thoughts.

Through events like these, the Egyptian Museum is deepening public engagement, promoting cutting-edge research, and reinforcing the vital connections between the world’s past and present. The organizers invite everyone to follow upcoming posts, which will explore each lecture in detail.
