Egypt announces plans to host Aswan Forum, calls for stronger international support for Africa

Yokohama, Japan – Representing President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly addressed global leaders at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), highlighting Egypt’s vision for promoting peace, stability, and development across the continent.

Prime Minister Madbouly began by conveying President El-Sisi’s greetings and Egypt’s deep appreciation for Japan’s ongoing partnership with Africa, particularly in the crucial areas of peace, security, and sustainable development. He also commended Angola’s effective leadership of the African Union during challenging times.

Dr. Madbouly shed light on the growing challenges facing Africa—including armed conflicts, terrorism, climate change, high rates of poverty and unemployment, and threats to food and water security. He stressed the urgent need for strong support from international partners, especially Japan, to empower African efforts in overcoming these obstacles.

The Egyptian Prime Minister noted Egypt’s active role in advancing post-conflict reconstruction and development across Africa, as well as its hosting of the Cairo-based African Post-Conflict Reconstruction Center. He reiterated Egypt’s commitment to cooperation with fellow African nations through the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development.

Significantly, Dr. Madbouly announced that Egypt will host the 5th “Aswan Forum” in October, bringing African leaders together to discuss pressing regional issues at the intersection of peace, security, and development, and called for continued and closer partnership with Japan and other global allies.

Highlighting peace efforts, Dr. Madbouly praised the tireless work of African nations to support peace in Sudan, eastern Congo, the Sahel, and Somalia, including Egypt’s contribution to the AUSSOM African peace mission and Cairo’s increased financial backing for these peace operations. He thanked Japan for its steadfast support and encouraged the international community to provide funding for ongoing peacekeeping efforts, particularly in Somalia.

The Prime Minister concluded with a strong call for urgent action on the Palestinian issue, urging the global community not only to condemn Israeli policies but to take concrete steps—such as recognizing the State of Palestine—to safeguard Palestinian rights and advance lasting peace in the region.

Egypt’s participation at TICAD 9 reaffirms its leadership role in Africa and its commitment to working with international partners for a more peaceful and prosperous continent.
