Egypt trains 5,000 Palestinian police for Gaza deployment, signals robust role in reconstruction

Egypt is training 5,000 Palestinian police officers in Egyptian camps, in collaboration with Jordan, to address the current security vacuum in Gaza, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced.

The initiative aims to deploy these forces in Gaza to restore order and support the Palestinian Authority’s governance, as part of broader efforts to unify the Palestinian territories.

Speaking on DMC’s Masaa DMC program, Abdelatty revealed that the deployment of these police units and the reconstruction of Gaza will fall under the oversight of the Palestinian Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister is set to attend the upcoming Cairo International Conference for Gaza Reconstruction, which will follow a hoped-for ceasefire in the region. The conference will host workshops focusing on policing arrangements, development, and rebuilding efforts, with the Palestinian Authority tasked with managing Gaza through a dedicated committee to ensure territorial unity.

Abdelatty emphasized Egypt’s firm stance against Israel’s current policies, which he described as rooted in “domination and arrogance of power.” He warned that Israel’s military escalation in Gaza, aimed at establishing full control, will not bring security or stability.

“Egypt firmly believes that Israel’s security can only be achieved through serious engagement with the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state,” he said. He stressed that the use of force will not lead to peace but will further complicate the regional situation.

Egypt is actively engaging at regional and international levels to halt Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, Abdelatty noted. Through consultations with Hamas, Israel, Qatar, and the United States, Egypt is pushing for a ceasefire and a deal to end the conflict entirely while ensuring humanitarian aid reaches Palestinians.

“Egypt’s position on the Palestinian cause is unequivocal,” he affirmed, underscoring Cairo’s commitment to de-escalation and support for Palestinian self-determination.

The training program and Egypt’s diplomatic efforts signal a proactive role in stabilizing Gaza and fostering long-term peace, with Cairo positioning itself as a key mediator in the region.
