Tragedy in Egypt: 5 siblings die of gas leak in family home
In a heart-wrenching tragedy that has shocked Egypt, five siblings—aged between 8 and 15—lost their lives after succumbing to a gas leak in their family home in the village of Meet Asim, in Qalyubia Governorate, near Cairo.
The incident took place when a water heater reportedly exploded while one of the sisters was showering, causing an immediate and deadly gas leak. According to local reports and eyewitness accounts, the young girl died instantly. The concentration of gas quickly filled the home, leading to the suffocation of her four siblings as they slept in their rooms, unable to respond or call for help. The speed and severity of the accident left no opportunity for intervention.
The children, named Ibrahim (15), Khadija (14), Ruqaya (13), Maryam (12), and Jana (8), were living on their own after their mother traveled abroad for work two months prior, while their father was also working overseas. An aunt had been regularly checking in on the siblings, as their guardian in their parents’ absence.
The tragedy came to light when the aunt, unable to reach the children by phone, went to the house and discovered the heartbreaking scene. Overcome with grief, she required hospitalization and continues to receive medical care.
Egyptian authorities, including forensic teams and prosecutors, are conducting a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances leading to the gas leak. The children’s bodies remain at Benha Educational Hospital morgue, awaiting burial permissions.
The news has sent waves of sorrow throughout the community and the nation at large. The five siblings were the children of Dr. Ibtisam Nasr, a professor of general surgery at Benha University Faculty of Medicine. The university released a statement expressing profound condolences and deep sadness to Dr. Nasr and her family—a sentiment echoed by neighbors and citizens across Egypt.
Details about the children’s background revealed that, after a period abroad with their parents, they had returned to Egypt to learn Arabic and continue their education. Their mother had left for work abroad just two months before the accident, leaving the siblings in the care of their aunt.
As the Egyptian community grieves, authorities continue their investigation, determined to shed light on this devastating incident and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
