Egypt and China's MingYang Smart Energy discuss deepening renewable energy cooperation
Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy is forging new partnerships to expand the country’s renewable energy sector. In a recent virtual meeting, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, held high-level talks with Mr. Xing Zhang, Chairman of China’s MingYang Smart Energy—one of the world’s leading manufacturers of onshore and offshore wind turbines.
The discussions centered on enhancing cooperation in renewable energy, with a particular focus on localizing the manufacturing of wind turbine components and transferring advanced wind technologies to Egypt. The initiative aligns with Egypt’s national strategy to increase the local content in major projects, especially in clean energy, and to position the country as a regional leader in renewable technology.
Key areas under consideration included the introduction of cutting-edge wind turbine technologies to Egypt, the potential for manufacturing components domestically, and increasing Egypt’s access to nearby regional markets. The meeting also explored government incentives for foreign investment, regulations favoring local manufacturing, and ways to integrate renewables more deeply into Egypt’s power mix.
Dr. Esmat emphasized Egypt’s commitment to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing renewables’ share in the national energy mix to more than 42% by 2030 and 65% by 2040. The Minister highlighted recent large-scale improvements to Egypt’s energy infrastructure, which have created a favorable environment for international investors.
MingYang Smart Energy, with extensive experience in delivering integrated clean energy solutions globally, expressed interest in supporting Egypt’s ambitions through technology transfer and joint projects. The talks also addressed the broader vision to localize the production of other renewable energy components, such as solar cells and battery storage systems, as Egypt works toward greater energy sustainability and a reduction in carbon emissions.
Egypt’s government is actively creating legislative and investment incentives to encourage private sector participation in renewable energy, aiming to draw more international partners and drive sustainable development.
This move is part of Egypt’s comprehensive energy transition plan, designed to ensure energy security, increase sustainability, and position the country as a growing hub for renewable energy industries in the Middle East and Africa.
