Egypt praises deepening economic co-operation with China

Egypt’s Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly commended the vital role played by Chinese companies in Egypt's ongoing major development projects, underlining a new era of dynamic cooperation between Egypt and China.

During a meeting in Cairo on Tuesday evening with Mr. Mo Hong, Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of its China-Africa Friendship Group, Dr. Madbouly praised Chinese participation in projects such as the New Administrative Capital’s Central Business District, the Alamein Towers, and Egypt’s new light rail transit system. He particularly highlighted increased Chinese investments in the Suez Canal Economic Zone’s “TEDA” industrial area, joint ventures in renewable energy and sea water desalination, and other areas that have strengthened bilateral ties.

The meeting was also attended by China’s Ambassador to Egypt, Liao Liqiang, and Egypt’s Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs, Ambassador Amr Hamza.

Warmly welcoming the Chinese delegation, Dr. Madbouly noted the long-standing strategic partnership between Cairo and Beijing. He recalled that Egypt was the first Arab and African nation to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in 1956—a bond that will mark its 70th anniversary next year. Dr. Madbouly reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the “One China” principle and expressed gratitude for China’s backing of Egypt’s water security rights.

He also noted that bilateral relations reached a “comprehensive strategic partnership” in 2014, and the two countries celebrated the 10th anniversary of this partnership last year. The prime minister welcomed high-level exchanges, including recent visits by Egyptian parliamentary leaders to China and senior Chinese officials to Egypt.

Dr. Madbouly congratulated China on the successful conclusion of the Communist Party’s 20th Central Committee session and its approval of China’s 15th five-year economic and social development plan. He offered best wishes for continued Chinese progress and thanked Chinese officials for their hospitality during his recent visit to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.

“We attach great importance to Chinese companies collaborating in Egypt’s priority projects,” Dr. Madbouly said, emphasizing that Egypt is ready to offer comprehensive support. He encouraged Chinese firms to use Egypt as a gateway not only to Africa but also to the Arab world and the European Union, highlighting investment opportunities in industries such as electric vehicles, home appliances, mobile devices, renewable energy, and technology transfer.

Mr. Mo Hong thanked Dr. Madbouly for making time for the meeting despite his busy schedule, especially following his return from major international events like the G20 meetings in South Africa and the recent African Union-European Union summit.

Conveying greetings from China’s Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Mo reiterated the strength of the “strategic friendship” between the two nations, underpinned by personal ties between their leaders. He confirmed China’s support for Egypt’s national sovereignty and non-interference in its internal affairs and applauded Egypt’s commitment to the “One China” policy.

Mr. Mo expressed anticipation for Egypt’s participation in the upcoming China-Arab Summit in Beijing and looked forward to deepening cooperation in fields including economy, trade, and investment. He noted Egypt’s vast land resources and large population, describing the country as brimming with potential.

The Chinese delegation emphasized synergy between China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Egypt Vision 2030. Mr. Mo also extended an invitation for Egypt to join a new Chinese initiative granting tariff exemptions to exports from 53 African countries, further opening doors to trade and development.

The increasingly vibrant partnership reflects a shared commitment to mutual growth, with both nations poised to expand collaboration in infrastructure, renewable energy, and industrial development for the years to come.
