Egypt, EU envoy discuss Sudan crisis, Somalia security, and Red Sea stability at Oslo Forum

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa Annette Weber held talks on Thursday to address key regional issues, including the escalating conflict in Sudan, security concerns in Somalia, and maritime navigation in the Red Sea.

Their meeting took place on the sidelines of the annual Oslo Forum in Norway.

During the discussion, Minister Abdelatty stressed the urgent need to protect Sudanese civilians, alleviate their suffering, and preserve Sudan’s unity and resources.

He detailed Egypt’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to seek a prompt resolution to the Sudanese crisis, highlighting his country’s willingness to engage in all mediation and settlement initiatives, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The leaders also exchanged perspectives on the broader political and security dynamics across the Horn of Africa.

Minister Abdelatty emphasized the importance of strengthening international and regional cooperation to address security risks, including terrorism and the rise of extremism. He pointed out Somalia’s central security and political challenges, underscoring the need to support state institutions to maintain peace, stability, sovereignty, and unity.

Their conversation included the transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), with both parties highlighting the critical need for sustained funding to ensure the mission’s success.

Egypt has been contributing to AUSSOM since its deployment in Somalia in January.

Additionally, Abdelatty highlighted the crucial role of safeguarding international shipping lanes and boosting cooperation among Red Sea border nations. He emphasized that such collaboration is essential to secure the Red Sea and guarantee freedom of navigation, warning that any instability in this strategic region could have significant repercussions for the global economy, especially amid rising regional challenges.

Annette Weber, for her part, commended Egypt’s strong and active commitment to promoting stability in the Horn of Africa. She also reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to continued dialogue and partnership with Egypt to advance security and stability in the region.
