Egypt renews commitment to fighting human trafficking on World Day

On the occasion of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly made a strong declaration of the country’s commitment to combat human trafficking, describing the fight as "not only a legal obligation, but a moral and humanitarian duty." His remarks echoed the theme of this year’s awareness day, “Organized Crime: Stop the Exploitation,” and coincided with the 25th anniversary of the UN Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children—a protocol Egypt was among the first to ratify.

Prime Minister Madbouly reviewed Egypt’s determination to uphold its international commitments, referencing Law No. 64 of 2010 on combating human trafficking, which aligns with global standards and principles. He emphasized that the Egyptian government is unwavering in its efforts to confront this crime, stating, "Human trafficking is a grave violation of human dignity and a threat to the security and stability of societies worldwide."

Highlighting recent national actions, the Prime Minister noted that Egypt, guided by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, has expanded shelters for victims across governorates, enhanced training for shelter staff, and implemented new regulations to further assist victims through financial, psychological, and educational support. A dedicated fund has also been established to strengthen these efforts, including research and awareness programs.

Dr. Madbouly acknowledged the important role played by the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons, law enforcement agencies, and care providers in breaking criminal networks and supporting victims.

The Prime Minister underlined that Egypt’s strategy encompasses strengthening law enforcement capabilities, updating national legislation in line with international human rights standards, increasing public awareness, and reinforcing safe reporting channels. He called for broader regional and international partnerships to create lasting impacts in the fight against human trafficking.

Concluding his speech, Prime Minister Madbouly called for greater solidarity and cooperation among governments, international organizations, and civil society. “We must put victims at the heart of our efforts and work together for a world free of human trafficking,” he said.
