Egypt urges crossfire, reconstruction in Gaza during talks with EU peace envoy
Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty, held discussions on Sunday with Mr. Sven Koopmans, the EU Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process, amid ongoing efforts to address the escalating crisis in Gaza.
During the meeting, Minister Abdel-Aty emphasized Egypt’s ongoing cooperation with Qatar and the United States to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, facilitate the exchange of hostages and detainees, and ensure the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian aid. He warned of the deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, citing continued Israeli restrictions on aid access.
Minister Abdel-Aty also reiterated Egypt’s readiness to host a conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza once a ceasefire is achieved.
He called for an immediate end to Israeli military operations against Palestinians and renewed Egypt’s categorical rejection of any displacement of Palestinians from their land.
Turning to the serious developments in the West Bank, Minister Abdel-Aty condemned ongoing Israeli military operations and settler violence towards Palestinian civilians, stressing the urgent need for these actions to stop.
Looking ahead, Egypt expressed its strong support for an international peace conference—co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia—to advance a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Minister Abdel-Aty urged broader international recognition of Palestine and reiterated Egypt’s support for the two-state solution based on 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state, describing it as the only viable path to lasting peace, security, and stability in the region.
