Egypt in talks with Turkey on pharma investment
Egypt’s Drug Authority Chairman Ali El‑Ghamrawy met a delegation from Turkish pharmaceutical company Abdi Ibrahim to discuss potential cooperation and opportunities to localize drug manufacturing in the Egyptian market, the authority said in a statement on Thursday.
The delegation was led by board member and CEO Tasbulatoglu Suha, accompanied by executive board member and head of international markets Ulgen Koksal, as well as Sherif Hamed, commercial attaché at the Egyptian Commercial Service.
El‑Ghamrawy said the authority was committed to strengthening collaboration with leading global pharmaceutical companies as part of Egypt’s efforts to expand local production capacity and attract foreign investment. He added that Egypt offered a promising regulatory environment and a strategic platform for regional pharmaceutical operations.
He said the authority was working to create an investment‑friendly regulatory framework that encourages technology transfer and the localization of advanced drug manufacturing, positioning Egypt as a regional hub for producing and exporting medicines, particularly to African markets.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed possible business models for Abdi Ibrahim’s presence in Egypt, as well as opportunities for transferring pharmaceutical technology. The delegation was briefed on Egypt’s regulatory and legal framework governing drug manufacturing, licensing and registration procedures, and requirements for establishing pharmaceutical facilities.
Representatives of Abdi Ibrahim praised recent developments in Egypt’s regulatory system and expressed interest in expanding the company’s presence in the country and exploring cooperation in manufacturing and technology transfer to support local industry and strengthen export capabilities.
Abdi Ibrahim is one of Turkey’s leading pharmaceutical manufacturers, with a portfolio of more than 500 products.
The meeting is part of the Egyptian Drug Authority’s broader strategy to deepen cooperation with major global players, support drug industry localization and boost Egypt’s pharmaceutical security and export potential.
