New well at Egypt's Zohr field bolsters national gas supply

Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced a significant boost to national gas production following the successful drilling of the "Zohr 6” well in the Mediterranean’s Zohr gas field.

The new well—using the Saipem 10000 offshore drillship—has added 60 million cubic feet of natural gas per day to Egypt’s output, strengthening the country’s energy supply amid growing domestic demand.

Efforts continue to ramp up production: after completing operations at Zohr 6, the rig has moved to drill "Zohr 13," expected to contribute an additional 55 million cubic feet daily, according to engineering studies.

These advances stem from Egypt’s ongoing partnership with Italy’s Eni, the operating company at Zohr.

The Ministry credits strategic development plans and cutting-edge deepwater drilling technologies, enabled by strong government support, as key factors in expediting new production. Officials emphasize that increasing local energy resources is crucial for supporting Egypt’s economic growth and ensuring energy security.

Zohr, one of the largest gas discoveries in the Mediterranean, remains central to Egypt’s ambition to be a regional energy hub, serving both domestic needs and export markets.
