Egypt, Cyprus and Greece seek to speed up East Mediterranean gas projects
Egypt, Cyprus and Greece have discussed accelerating the development of East Mediterranean gas resources and linking them to European markets, Egypt’s petroleum ministry said.
Egyptian Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi met his Cypriot and Greek counterparts, Michael Damianos and Stavros Papastavrou, on the sidelines of a meeting of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum in Athens.
The ministers discussed using Egypt’s gas-processing and liquefaction facilities to transport and export gas from Cyprus’s Cronos and Aphrodite fields, the ministry said in a statement.
Badawi said the three countries had complementary assets, including Cyprus’s gas reserves, Egypt’s energy infrastructure and Greece’s location and pipeline links to southern and central Europe.
The ministers also discussed expanding regional infrastructure and addressing technical, commercial and regulatory hurdles to move priority projects towards final investment decisions and construction.
They called for clear regulations and commercial arrangements to attract investment, and said the East Mediterranean Gas Forum should continue to serve as a platform for regional coordination.
The cooperation aims to connect the region’s gas resources with European markets and strengthen energy security, the statement said.
