Japanese Film Week to screen six films in Cairo, Alexandria
The Japan Foundation, Cairo, will screen six Japanese films in Cairo and Alexandria from Oct. 17 to 24, offering a programme spanning animation, family drama and comedy.
All screenings are free, the foundation said.
The Cairo programme opens on Oct. 17 at the Artistic Creativity Center in the Cairo Opera House with Penguin Highway (2018), an animated film about a schoolboy investigating the sudden appearance of penguins in his neighbourhood.
The lineup also includes BISHU: The World’s Kindest Clothes (2024), about a teenager pursuing a fashion design competition; animated fantasy The Wonderland (2019); and the dramas Kanasando and Sunset Sunrise, both released in 2025.
The sixth film, The Hotel of My Dream (2025), follows an aspiring writer who seeks revenge on a celebrated author after his criticism derails her debut.
Cairo screenings run through Oct. 22. The festival moves to the Jesuit Culture Center in Alexandria on Oct. 23 and 24, with screenings of The Hotel of My Dream, Penguin Highway, The Wonderland and Sunset Sunrise.
The Japan Foundation, founded in 1972, promotes international cultural exchange. Its Cairo office, established in 1995, is the organisation’s only branch in the Middle East and Africa.
