Egyptian, UK officials discuss bilateral ties, Gaza crisis

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty, held a telephone discussion on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, with the UK’s National Security Advisor, Mr. Jonathan Powell, according to a statement from Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During their call, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations and agreed on advancing ties towards a strategic partnership in various fields. They also exchanged views on pressing regional issues.

Addressing the situation in Gaza, Dr. Abdel Aaty strongly condemned the continued Israeli violations of international humanitarian law, including attacks on journalists, medical and aid workers, and the recent Israeli incursion into Ramallah. He reiterated Egypt’s firm rejection of these actions, particularly the ongoing obstruction of humanitarian and medical aid to Gaza, which has led to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. Dr. Abdel Aaty called for urgent international intervention to end hostilities in Gaza.

The Egyptian Minister welcomed recent statements by several Western countries, including the UK, expressing their intention to recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming UN General Assembly in September. He stressed that widening recognition of an independent Palestinian state, based on the June 4, 1967 borders, is essential for lasting security and stability in the region.

On another note, Dr. Abdel Aaty expressed Egypt’s concern over the recent arrest of Egyptian citizen Mr. Ahmed Abdelkader in London on August 25. He requested clarification of the reasons for his detention and called for a prompt investigation and release.

The Minister has instructed the Egyptian embassy in London to follow the case closely, provide consular support, and to work with UK authorities to secure Mr. Abdelkader’s swift release.
