Aswan governor honors Sir Magdi Yacoub with the 'Key to the City'
Aswan, Egypt – In a heartwarming celebration of medical excellence and humanitarian achievement, Dr. Ismail Kamal—the Governor of Aswan—presented the symbolic "Key to the City" to internationally acclaimed heart surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub.
The honor recognizes Sir Magdi’s outstanding national and global contributions in medicine, science, and humanitarian service.
The ceremony took place today during the Governor’s visit to the Magdi Yacoub Heart Center in Aswan, a world-class institution renowned for its groundbreaking cardiac care and life-saving surgeries—offered completely free to patients in need.
Governor Kamal announced that plans are underway, in coordination with Egypt’s Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Transportation and Industry, Gen. Kamel El-Wazir, to name a major new bridge and transport hub in Aswan after Sir Magdi Yacoub.
This gesture commemorates his status as one of Egypt’s most admired figures and pays tribute to his steadfast commitment to offering compassionate, high-quality healthcare to all.
Expressing his gratitude, Sir Magdi Yacoub thanked the Governor of Aswan for his ongoing support and underscored his dedication to providing advanced medical services with dignity and care to every patient.
The Magdi Yacoub Heart Center, located in Aswan, is a beacon of hope for patients from across Egypt and Africa. Each year, it performs over 4,500 life-saving procedures—including open heart surgeries and cardiac catheterizations—while its outpatient clinics care for more than 45,000 patients annually.
The state-of-the-art center is equipped with 100 beds, operating rooms with the latest medical technology, specially designed intensive care units for children and adults, comfortable patient accommodations, and a modern research and training wing. Through its commitment to education, the center prepares a new generation of Egyptian and international doctors, nurses, and technicians—ensuring that Sir Magdi Yacoub’s legacy of healing and kindness will continue for years to come.
