Egypt lift New Capital Cup after 1–0 win over Russia
Egypt’s national football team were crowned champions of the 2026 New Capital Cup on Thursday after defeating Russia 1–0 in a friendly match at Cairo International Stadium, the Ministry of Youth and Sports said in a statement.
Youth and Sports Minister Gohar Nabil attended the trophy ceremony, which followed Egypt’s narrow victory as part of their preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
The ceremony was also attended by Egyptian FA president Hani Abu Rida; Irina Bosirenina, secretary-general of the Russian Football Union and head of the Russian delegation; Yuri Matveyev, chargé d’affaires of the Russian embassy in Cairo; Mohamed Yehia, chairman of United Sports; Egyptian FA vice president Khaled El‑Drandaly; and Ahmed Fahmy, director general of the New Administrative Capital Company for Urban Development.
The friendly formed part of Egypt’s build‑up to the World Cup, where they will open their campaign against Belgium on June 15.
Egypt have been drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Iran and New Zealand.
