Egypt welcomes UN vote backing two-state solution for Palestine
Egypt has warmly welcomed the today’s adoption of a United Nations General Assembly resolution backing the New York Declaration on the implementation of a two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. The move reflects continued international momentum towards a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In a statement issued by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, the government cited the outcome of the recent high-level United Nations conference on the "Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution," which was co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France and held in New York last July.
Egypt highlighted that the resolution received support from 142 countries—a clear demonstration of the broad international consensus in favor of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. Foremost among these rights is their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state along the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Egyptian government called on all countries that supported the resolution to coordinate efforts to implement the conference's recommendations. Such action, Egypt emphasized, is essential for reviving the peace process in the Middle East and for putting an end to what it describes as Israel’s aggressive policies.
Egypt also stressed that genuine progress toward a just and lasting peace can only be achieved through earnest efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and by halting what it called “flagrant Israeli violations,” including the use of blockade and starvation as tactics to force Palestinian displacement. Egypt reaffirmed its firm rejection of any attempts to forcibly expel Palestinians from their land, under any pretext or justification.
Egypt reiterated its commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and to working with the international community toward the restoration of peace and stability in the region.
