Grand Egyptian Museum earns greenhouse gas report certification ahead of opening

In a landmark achievement for environmental stewardship, the Grand Egyptian Museum has officially received certification for its comprehensive greenhouse gas emissions report.

This important step, endorsed by Egypt’s General Organization for Export and Import Control and the National Accreditation Council (EGAC), comes as the museum prepares for its much-anticipated opening.

The report, reviewed in a meeting attended by Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim (CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum), Major General Eng. Essam El-Naggar (Head of the General Organization for Export and Import Control), Eng. Hani El-Desouky (Executive Director of EGAC), and Dr. Shaimaa Eid (Head of Safety and Environmental Protection at the museum), covers the museum’s carbon footprint throughout all operational stages. The certification highlights the museum’s alignment with international standards in environmental protection and sustainability.

Dr. Ghoneim emphasized that this recognition positions the Grand Egyptian Museum as not only a cultural and historical institution, but also a global leader in environmental responsibility and community engagement. He noted that adopting rigorous environmental standards makes the museum even more attractive to international tourists and affirms its commitment to sustainable practices.

Major General Essam El-Naggar highlighted the significance of this achievement, describing it as a pivotal step in advancing sustainable development within national mega-projects. “This milestone underscores Egypt's commitment to integrating environmental considerations into its major cultural and construction initiatives,” he said.

Hani El-Desouky said that the National Accreditation Council is devoted to ensuring a balance between the modernization of monumental projects and environmental preservation, in line with Egypt’s vision for sustainable development.

Dr. Shaimaa Eid expressed pride in the museum’s accomplishment, saying that the adoption of an accredited greenhouse gas report demonstrates a sincere commitment to reducing negative climate impacts—fully in step with Egypt’s national strategies for environmental and social responsibility.

It is noteworthy that the Grand Egyptian Museum previously obtained the “EDGE Advance” certificate, making it the first “green museum” in Africa and the Middle East. This distinction places the institution at the forefront of sustainable policies across the region.

With these achievements, the Grand Egyptian Museum is set to welcome visitors not only as a guardian of Egyptian heritage, but also as a model of environmental leadership for the world.
