United States announces decision to withdraw from UNESCO

Today, the United States notified UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay of its intention to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The U.S. Department of State stated that ongoing participation in UNESCO is no longer aligned with American national interests.

In its announcement, the State Department expressed concerns about the organization’s emphasis on certain global development goals and social issues, as well as its decision to admit the “State of Palestine” as a member—moves the U.S. sees as conflicting with its policy positions and as contributing to anti-Israel sentiment within the agency.

The withdrawal, which follows the guidelines of UNESCO’s constitution, will become effective on December 31, 2026. Until then, the United States will remain a full member and continue to participate in the organization’s work.

According to U.S. officials, the country remains committed to engaging in international organizations, but will do so in ways that more clearly advance American interests and values.
