S. Korean president outlines vision for Middle East partnerships in landmark visit to Cairo University

In a historic moment of international friendship, South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung visited Cairo University for his first official trip to Egypt since taking office, sharing an inspiring message of collaboration and innovation with students and dignitaries. Addressing a vibrant audience in the university’s grand hall—a beacon of learning since its founding—President Lee presented South Korea’s new initiatives for partnership with the Middle East, underscoring the enduring ties and shared aspirations between his country and Egypt.

President Lee expressed heartfelt admiration for the Egyptian people and culture, noting, “Cairo University is the first university I’ve chosen to visit, because its students are the future force driving forward the relationship between Korea and Egypt—two countries with histories reaching back thousands of years.” He praised the university’s legacy as a bridge between civilizations and acknowledged the three decades of strong diplomatic ties between Cairo and Seoul.

Highlighting the robust success stories already achieved—such as collaboration on Egypt’s electric trains, joint ventures in mobile technology, and growing academic exchange—President Lee outlined his vision to expand cooperation into new fields. These include energy, artificial intelligence, cultural exchange, and joint research, with a focus on innovation to serve the next generation. He announced a $10 million contribution to the Egyptian Red Crescent and reaffirmed Korea’s commitment to reconstruction efforts in Gaza, reflecting the values of peace, prosperity, and cultural understanding.

Recognizing the deep mutual respect between Egypt and South Korea, President Lee stated, “Though we are separated by geography, our nations are united by determination and a shared pursuit of progress. Young people from both countries will lead the way into a brighter future for our nations and the wider region.”

Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Ayman Ashour, warmly welcomed President Lee, describing Cairo University as “a beacon of science, a symbol of intercultural dialogue, and a proud host to this exceptional occasion—a true testament to the depth of Egypt-Korea relations.” He emphasized that the partnership has already yielded excellence in academic, scientific, and industrial innovation and saw the visit as a catalyst for even greater cooperation in higher education, research, and technology.

The president of Cairo University, Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdelsadek, shared similar sentiments, calling the event a turning point in the university’s history and a glowing message of respect and friendship from the Korean people to Egyptians.

As the ceremony concluded, President Lee encouraged Egyptian and Korean youth to strengthen their bonds—envisioning them as leaders in shaping a dynamic, peaceful, and prosperous future for both nations and for the world.

This landmark visit not only celebrates the achievements and shared dreams of Egypt and South Korea but also opens new chapters for collaboration—where the wisdom of the past and the promise of youth bring hope for a brighter tomorrow.
