Egypt sets ambitious targets for AI and tech growth, celebrates industry milestones
In a message of optimism and progress shared during the annual celebration of Egypt's 'Eitesal' Association, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dr. Amr Talaat, outlined bold new targets for artificial intelligence (AI) and technology industries in Egypt, reflecting remarkable growth and future ambitions.
Egypt aims for AI to contribute 7.7% to GDP by 2030
Dr. Amr Talaat highlighted Egypt's rapidly advancing digital transformation, emphasizing that the country seeks to have AI contribute 7.7% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030. The minister explained that Egypt’s updated national AI strategy, launched last year, is built on six key pillars: strengthening infrastructure, enacting robust data governance, refining regulatory frameworks, launching high-impact applications (such as early breast cancer detection and speech-to-text tools for the justice sector), building local expertise, and fostering broad societal awareness of AI.
Expanding manufacturing and outsourcing excellence
The minister also announced significant strides in Egypt’s technology manufacturing sector. The number of mobile phone factories in Egypt has grown to 14, with plans for production to nearly triple from 3.5 million phones in 2024 to 9 million in the coming year. These developments are expected to boost exports, supported by Egypt’s free trade agreements, helping local manufacturers gain a stronger competitive edge regionally and globally.
The business process outsourcing (BPO) and IT export sector has seen equally remarkable growth. Over the past three years, exports soared by 80%, reaching $4.3 billion in 2024. The number of specialists in the industry has risen to over 160,000, a 70% increase, while the number of BPO companies has tripled, surpassing 180 firms.
Dr. Talaat praised the collective efforts of Egypt’s ICT sector, emphasizing the role of state-backed training, technical innovation, and creative entrepreneurship in attracting global investment and creating sustainable jobs.
Nurturing talent and digital ambition
Dr. Talaat proudly highlighted the recent graduation of the first class from Egypt’s new Informatics University, the first in Africa dedicated to communications and IT, offering dual degrees with leading international universities. He affirmed ongoing efforts to train tens of thousands of youth in AI and digital technology, underscoring the government’s commitment to nurturing a digitally empowered generation.
Community, collaboration, and recognition
The event, marking 21 years since Eitesal’s founding, brought together leading figures from Egypt’s ICT industry, government, and civil society. Eitesal Chairman, Eng. Hossam Maguid, commended the sector’s collaborative spirit, noting that partnerships between government, industry, and community organizations are driving Egypt’s progress toward its digital vision.
In a spirit of encouragement and inspiration, this year’s event also honored emerging talents in entrepreneurship. The late Dr. Tarek Kamel Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship was bestowed upon the founders of P Vita, an Egyptian start-up specializing in biotech and AI solutions for sustainable agriculture.
Looking ahead
With clear strategies, expanding capabilities, and a vibrant community of innovators, Egypt is positioning itself as a key regional hub for digital innovation and AI-driven economic growth. The tone throughout the annual gathering was one of confidence, compassion, and shared purpose—hallmarks of an industry both ambitious and inclusive as it looks to the future.
