Egypt’s pharmaceutical industry nears historic self-sufficiency
Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector is on track for a historic breakthrough, as it targets 95% self-sufficiency in medicine production by the year 2030.
This ambitious goal, announced by Dr. Gamal El-Leithy, Chairman of the Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Industry Chamber, signals a new era of innovation, security, and economic opportunity for one of Africa’s most established industries.
Currently, Egypt’s domestic manufacturers supply an impressive 91.5% of the nation’s pharmaceutical needs, with imports accounting for a modest 8.5%. The country hosts one of the most advanced and long-standing pharmaceutical sectors in the Middle East and Africa, supported by a formidable annual production capacity of 8 billion units. While current production stands at 4 billion units, the sector holds ample room for expansion, both to better serve the local market and to boost exports abroad.
Despite facing a formidable dollar shortage crisis from 2022 through mid-2024, Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector emerged stronger and more resilient. Dr. El-Leithy confirmed that market stability returned in the latter half of 2024, positioning Egyptian manufacturers to accelerate growth and restore the nation’s strategic medicine reserves.
Egypt has also maintained a firm stance against counterfeit medicines, which remain rare within its regulated market. Dr. El-Leithy emphasized the importance of purchasing medications exclusively from licensed pharmacies, further safeguarding public health. Egyptian pharmaceutical expertise is renowned internationally, with professionals contributing to the industry’s development in several Gulf countries and reinforcing Egypt’s influence as a regional powerhouse.
Government strategy is now squarely focused on making Egypt a key regional hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and exports. According to projections cited by Fitch Solutions, Egypt’s pharmaceutical exports are expected to soar by 39% between 2025 and 2029, moving from $335.5 million to $466.5 million.
Egypt’s commitment to quality and modern regulation has garnered the endorsement of the World Health Organization, which awarded the country Maturity Level 3 in medicines and vaccine regulation. The African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also lauded Egypt as a quality model for achieving self-sufficiency on the continent.
The sector’s robust infrastructure includes 179 pharmaceutical factories producing a diverse range of medications. Egypt maintains a strategic reserve of raw materials sufficient for three months’ production, further buffering it from global supply chain disruptions. The country’s pharmaceutical exports have surged 65.6% since 2019, with Egyptian medicines reaching more than 147 international markets.
Since its inception in 2019, the Egyptian Drug Authority has approved the licensing of 31 new factories and localized production of 180 antibiotic formulations, ensuring both quantity and quality for patients at home and abroad.
A testament to Egypt’s innovation is the Jubail Pharma City, inaugurated in 2021. It produces 100 million packages annually and plans to double output by 2025. Key industry players, including the national firm Vaxera, private leader Eipico, and multinational AstraZeneca Egypt, have invested significantly to boost local production and develop alternative solutions. A major milestone was achieved in late 2024 with the unveiling of locally manufactured insulin, marking a new chapter in life-saving treatment for Egyptians.
With a market value exceeding $6.2 billion, Egypt stands as Africa’s largest pharmaceutical market, offering more than 12,000 registered medicines to its population of over 105 million. The rollout of a comprehensive health insurance system means demand is likely to keep rising, along with the sector’s capacity and ambition.
Looking ahead, Egypt’s pharmaceutical exports have climbed from $700 million in 2020 to $1.2 billion in 2024. The government has set its sights even higher, targeting $2 billion in exports by 2027 as part of a dynamic strategy to cement Egypt’s status as a globally recognized leader in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
As the world turns its attention to resilient health systems and robust local production, Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector is truly coming of age—ready to serve its people and share its success with the world.
