Egyptian Minister participates in 14th AMCOW General Assembly in Dakar

Dakar, Senegal – Dr. Hani Sweilam, Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, participated on Monday in the 14th Ordinary Session of the General Assembly of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), held in the Senegalese capital, Dakar.

Dr. Sweilam emphasized Egypt’s commitment to building on AMCOW’s past successes, achieved during Egypt’s presidency of the council from 2023 to 2025. He highlighted the goal of advancing water-related issues across Africa through continued achievements.

In his remarks, the Minister noted that this session comes at a critical time as Africa faces escalating impacts of climate change, including unprecedented floods, droughts, and cyclones. These challenges affect tens of thousands of citizens across the continent, disrupting water services and infrastructure.

Dr. Sweilam underscored Egypt’s efforts in recent years to elevate the global importance of water issues and advocate for increased funding for the water sector in African countries. Despite these efforts, he stressed the urgent need for further action to achieve the African Union’s Agenda 2063. This includes improving access to water and sanitation for African communities, adopting climate-resilient planning, enhancing water management, and strengthening member states’ capacities in data management and information sharing.

Prior to the General Assembly, Dr. Sweilam held a consultative meeting with H.E. Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Gaye, Senegal’s Minister of Water and Sanitation, to discuss shared priorities and measures to support AMCOW’s activities for the benefit of African nations.
