Egypt voices deep concern over famine in Gaza, urges international action
Egypt has expressed grave alarm over mounting reports of famine in the Gaza Strip, as confirmed by the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report. The report officially documented famine conditions in Gaza after 22 months of intense Israeli military operations and reported violations against civilians.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Egyptian Expatriates, Egypt called on the international community to decisively address the ongoing humanitarian crisis and halt what it described as egregious violations. The ministry criticized Israel’s restrictions on humanitarian aid, noting that available assistance could swiftly alleviate the famine if allowed entry.
Egypt underscored the international community’s responsibility for the worsening situation, attributing it to inconsistent global human rights standards. The statement accused the international community of failing to uphold fundamental human rights principles during Israel’s offensive, leaving Gaza’s population without basic necessities.
The ministry also praised UN Secretary-General António Guterres for labeling the famine a “man-made disaster” and a “failure of humanity.” Guterres emphasized Israel’s obligations under international law, as the occupying power, to ensure the delivery of essential medical and food supplies to Gaza’s residents.
Egypt reiterated its call for immediate international intervention to end the conflict and facilitate unhindered humanitarian aid to avert further deterioration of the crisis.
