Egypt and Norway strengthen ties, discuss energy and regional cooperation

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Expatriates, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, met today with Norway’s Minister of International Development, Mr. Osmund Okrost, for high-level talks aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new areas of cooperation.

During the meeting, Minister Abdelatty warmly welcomed the growing partnership between Egypt and Norway. He highlighted the significance of the Egyptian President’s visit to Norway last December, describing it as a milestone that has boosted ties between the two nations. The minister further praised the existing economic collaboration, particularly in renewable energy. He noted the active role of the Norwegian company "Scatec" in implementing energy projects in Egypt, and reiterated Egypt’s full support for the company’s initiatives. Minister Abdelatty expressed hope for expanding such projects, including efforts to localize industry within Egypt.

Highlighting opportunities for future cooperation, Minister Abdelatty called for increased funding from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation in development projects in Egypt, especially in clean energy and aquaculture. He also reviewed Egypt’s recent economic and financial reforms, underlining the country’s favorable investment climate and the importance of boosting bilateral trade.

On a regional level, the ministers discussed possibilities for joint cooperation in Africa, following Norway’s recent launch of a new strategy for the continent. Minister Abdelatty suggested collaboration via the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development and the Cairo Center for Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping, alongside relevant Norwegian agencies and funds. He also invited the Norwegian side to participate in the upcoming Aswan Forum for Sustainable Development and Peace, scheduled for October 19-20, describing it as a valuable platform for fostering partnerships between African nations and international development partners.

The two ministers also addressed the situation in Gaza and the Palestinian cause. Minister Abdelatty expressed appreciation for Norway’s steadfast support for the rights of the Palestinian people and its commitment to international law. He provided his Norwegian counterpart with updates on Egypt’s ongoing efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and the consultations Egypt is hosting in Sharm El Sheikh.
