Egypt’s tree-planting drive adds 150 trees to Cairo school
Egypt’s Ministry of Local Development and Environment has provided 150 trees to Al-Karnak School in Badr City, Cairo governorate, as part of a nationwide initiative to plant 100 million trees, the ministry said.
The trees were transported from the ministry’s central nursery and planted at the school, with staff and students taking part. The ministry said the planting is intended to expand green space, improve the school environment and encourage environmental awareness among students.
The ministry’s central committee is cataloguing the trees and monitoring their care to help ensure they survive, it said.
The ministry listed 50 cassia glauca, 20 Vitex agnus-castus, 20 broadleaf pepper trees and 30 yellow tecoma trees among those supplied. It did not specify the varieties of the remaining trees.
Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad said schools were a priority because students spend much of their daily lives there, adding that the programme aimed both to improve the environment and teach young people about caring for trees.
The ministry said it would continue planting across Egypt and strengthen follow-up measures, including tree registration and post-planting care.
